Indian businessman Sunjay Kapur, Chairman of automotive firm Sona Comstar and ex husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12 while playing polo in the UK. He was 53-year-old. 

 

 

Kapur reportedly suffered a heart attack during the game. The news was confirmed by business consultant Suhel Seth, who also mentioned that Kapur might have had a heart attack since he swallowed a bee during the game. Despite being extensively publicized, medical authorities have not verified the claim. Neither Kapur's family nor his business have released an official statement. 

 

 

Sunjay Kapur was Sona Group's third-generation successor and hailed from a well-known business family. Under his direction, Sona Comstar became one of India's top providers of automotive technology, growing its global presence and going public. In addition to his business accomplishments, he was well-known for fondness for polo and frequent appearances on India's social scene.

 

 

Only a few hours prior to his death, Kapur had been active on the internet. "Sad news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad," he wrote in a post on X, expressing his sympathies for the victims of the incident. "I'm praying and thinking of all the impacted families." 

 

 

Tributes poured in following the news of his death. Israel’s former ambassador to India Naor Gilon described the businessman as a dedicated father and entrepreneur, stating, “He died while following another passion of his, playing polo.”

 

 

Kapur was previously married to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor. The couple had two children before their divorce was finalized in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev.

 

 

Sunjay Kapur had studied at executive programs at Harvard and MIT. He was often seen as a bridge between the business and social elite in India, maintaining a public profile that spanned boardrooms, sporting fields, and media headlines.

 

 

Both the incident's suddenness and the peculiar circumstances surrounding it have garnered a lot of attention. His untimely demise has shocked both business and entertainment circles, however the cause is still unknown.
