A father of two allegedly died by suicide in Kot Radha Kishan, Kasur, after receiving a high electricity bill, according to police and his family.
The deceased, identified as Muhammad Nasir, was a factory worker and resident of Bhothan Pura, a suburban area of Kot Radha Kishan. Police said that he hanged himself inside his home.
Family members told police that Nasir had been under severe mental stress after receiving a Rs42,000 electricity bill for June, which they said he was unable to afford. They claimed the financial burden had left him deeply distressed in the days before his death.
The body was shifted to hospital for legal formalities, while police have launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The latest incident adds to a series of reported tragedies in which financial hardship has been cited as a contributing factor.
Earlier this month, Suthra Punjab programme worker Zeeshan died after setting himself on fire outside his office in Gujranwala, allegedly after being denied his full salary and subjected to illegal wage deductions. Officials said he had repeatedly complained that he could not feed his children due to his financial situation.
In another incident in Rawalpindi, a 22-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after reports linked the incident to a high utility bill. Police confirmed it was a case of suicide but said the exact motive was still under investigation.
