A consumer court has fined Khaadi Rs50,000 for charging a customer Rs30 for a shopping bag, ordering the brand to refund the amount to her.

According to reports, Judge Nasrullah Khan Gandapur announced the verdict on a complaint filed by Shafaq Aamir against Khaadi.

Aamir had approached the court in February this year over the bag charge. Lawyer Ahsan Sardar represented Aamir, while Mohammad Omea Advocate appeared for Khaadi.

According to the court’s judgement, Aamir filed the complaint under Section 13 of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Consumers Protection Act, 1997. She stated that on December 20, 2025, she purchased clothing worth Rs7,000 from a Khaadi outlet and was charged an additional Rs30 for a shopping bag printed with the brand’s promotional logo.

Khaadi did not deny the charge in its reply. Instead, it argued that it was not obligated to provide bags to customers free of charge and only offered bags on request.

The court reviewed the case under Section 14(2)(b) of the Act. It noted that the receipt attached to the complaint clearly showed the extra Rs30 charge for the bag, and Khaadi had confirmed both the sale and the receipt.

The judgement stated that customers typically expect their purchases to come in a bag without extra charge. The court noted that Khaadi, which it acknowledged as a leading fashion and lifestyle name with international recognition, charged customers Rs30 for a bag carrying its own logo.

“The bag with the logo of the respondent is obviously provided for the promotion of the brand and that, too, at the cost of the consumers,” the court said. “The respondent not only charged the complainant an extra amount but also used the bag to promote its brand. The respondents otherwise would have to provide ordinary bags to the customers.”

The court ruled that Khaadi’s conduct amounted to unfair trade under Section 2(O)(xii)(xiii) of the Act.

It directed Khaadi to refund the Rs30 charged for the bag, pay Rs25,000 in compensation to Aamir, and pay a separate fine of Rs25,000 to the government.
