Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has raised the issue of Vigo vehicles in the National Assembly (NA), calling them a symbol of vulgarity and demanding they be banned from Parliament Lodges and roads.
Speaking on the floor of the house on Sunday, Asif talked about green-number-plate Vigos speed through Parliament Lodges where members, their families and guests are present. “The Vigo itself has become a symbol of vulgarity, and it should be banned,” he said.
He added that something changes in a person the moment they sit behind the steering wheel of a Vigo.
“The moment someone sits behind the steering wheel of a Vigo, something seems to happen to their mind,” he remarked, adding that he witnesses this daily during his morning walks.
Asif also raised the issue of national flags being displayed on ministers’ vehicles after sunset, saying this practice should be stopped. He noted that flag protocol does not apply when a minister is seated in the middle seat.
He said that around 250 to 300 MNAs live at Parliament Lodges and if they require no security detail, there is little justification for ministers moving around with armed gunmen in speeding vehicles.
“Ban them from the roads as well,” he said. “If I have to use the word vulgarity, nothing represents it more than the Vigo”.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq responded by saying he would take up the matter.
