Residents in parts of Upper South Waziristan have reportedly begun extracting what they say are gold particles from a natural stream after reports of the presence of fine gold traces in the area.

Locals said that a number of people gathered near the stream after the information spread, with some attempting to collect particles using traditional methods.

Local elders stated that mercury was being used by some individuals to separate the particles, adding that concerns have emerged over possible contamination of the water in the stream.

Officials have not independently verified claims regarding the method being used or the extent of contamination.

Deputy Commissioner Asmatullah said that the administration has taken notice of the situation and action is being initiated.
