Police have arrested the prime suspect in the rape and murder of an 18-year-old first-year college student from Jhang, a day after she died during treatment at hospital.

The suspect was apprehended in Lahore. CCTV footage has also emerged showing the accused dropping the victim off at a hospital before fleeing the scene.

According to reports, the student, a resident of Sultan Colony, had left home on June 4 to collect her roll number slip and never returned. Her parents received a phone call the following evening informing them she was in a private hospital.

By the time they arrived, staff had already transferred her to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, where she remained under treatment through the night before dying on Tuesday.

Her father alleged that unknown individuals abducted his daughter, subjected her to sexual violence, and then killed her. He filed an abduction case at Satellite Police Station and appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to ensure justice for his family.

Police have said the exact cause of death will only be confirmed once the postmortem report is available.
