Lahore police have arrested a man accused of assaulting a woman riding a scooter in the city’s Mozang area, leaving her with a fractured nasal bone and facial injuries.
The arrest came after CCTV footage of the incident surfaced, showing the suspect stopping the woman, pulling her to the ground and assaulting her before bystanders intervened.
According to police, Mozang police reached the scene after receiving an emergency call through Police Emergency Helpline 15. A case was initially registered against an unidentified suspect on the complaint of the victim’s father.
Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Operations took notice of the incident and directed police to arrest the suspect immediately.
The footage shows a motorcyclist overtaking the woman’s scooter and blocking her way. He then gets off his motorcycle, grabs her and throws her to the ground. The suspect is also seen pulling her hair and verbally abusing her before people nearby step in to stop the assault.
According to the FIR [First Information Report], the suspect also snatched the woman’s bag and threw it to the ground, damaging a laptop worth around Rs85,000.
Police officials said that a special team was formed under the supervision of Civil Lines Superintendent of Police Maniza Karamat. The team later arrested the suspect during a raid with the help of modern technology.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said that the man had been arrested on the same night as the incident.
“Lahore police arrested the suspect who assaulted a girl riding a scooter that very night. Women and children are Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s red line. Such behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” she stated.
