The Crime Control Department (CCD) has said on Saturday that Sarfraz, the prime suspect in the murder of a bride in Gujranwala, was killed in an exchange of fire while being transported from Karachi to Punjab.

Sarfraz had reportedly been hiding out in Karachi with other suspects before the CCD arrested them. A department spokesperson said that the convoy transporting him came under attack, during which he was hit by gunfire, allegedly by his own accomplices.

CCD also said that the suspects, including a woman, had repeatedly changed their locations to evade arrest before being apprehended the previous night.

The case is related to the killing of a bride who was shot on the day of her wedding in Gujranwala.

Investigators said that the attack was carried out by Sarfraz after the woman’s family rejected his marriage proposal. The suspect allegedly stopped her vehicle as she was returning from the wedding reception and opened fire.

The woman’s father lodged a police complaint that led to the registration of a case at a CCD station in Gujranwala.

Gujranwala CCD booked three suspects, Sarfraz, his female cousin and an unidentified accomplice under sections 302 (premeditated murder), 311 (Ta’zir after waiver or compounding of the right of qisas in qatl-i-amd), 109 (punishment for abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The department also reported two other encounter deaths in recent days. On Friday, it said that two suspected robbers were killed in an exchange of fire in Kasur. Police said that they were wanted in several cases of robbery, house dacoity and murder in Kasur, Lahore and Sheikhupura.

On October 29, the CCD had said that a man wanted in the killing of a 10-year-old boy was shot dead during an encounter.
