Lahore police have arrested a man and his wife after the woman’s sister-in-law accused them of physically assaulting her and cutting off her hair 40 days after her husband’s death.
The widow contacted emergency helpline 15 seeking help, following which Lower Mall police took action and arrested the suspects, identified as Nageena and her husband Khurram.
The widow told the police that her in-laws had subjected her to physical violence and cut her hair off. She further alleged that the suspects threatened to throw her and her three children out of the house during the iddat period and threatened to kill her.
According to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations spokesperson, police registered a case against the suspects at Lower Mall Police Station.
In a similar incident in Rawalpindi’s Chaklala area, police detained a man and his parents after his wife accused them of physical abuse, including beating her and cutting her hair.
The woman, a resident of Shah Khalid Colony, lodged the FIR [First Information Report] at Chaklala Police Station, stating that she had been married for five years. She alleged that her husband and in-laws repeatedly beat her.
According to the complaint, she had endured the abuse to preserve her marriage. However, the latest incident took place while her husband was away at work.
She alleged that her mother-in-law, father-in-law and brother-in-law beat her and cut her hair while she was at home.
The woman managed to escape to a neighbour’s house and contacted her parents before approaching police with her sister to lodge a complaint against her husband and in-laws.
Police detained her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law. Investigators said that they were examining the matter from all angles and that violence, oppression and exploitation of women will not be tolerated.
