Actor Matthew McConaughey has urged Americans to consider independent candidates in November’s midterm elections, arguing that voters should look beyond the Democratic and Republican parties.
The Interstellar star made the appeal in a six-minute video posted on X, saying independent candidates should be given a chance to compete rather than being dismissed as having little chance of winning.
“So, they’ve been telling us for years that an independent vote is a wasted vote. Well, a great question for our times is: how’s that unwasted vote been working out for you?” McConaughey said.
The 56-year-old actor stressed that he was not endorsing any particular candidate or political party, but wanted voters to focus on fairness and political representation.
McConaughey argued that the United States (US) political system should offer voters alternatives beyond the two major parties, adding that independent candidates should be treated as potential winners rather than protest options.
“The number one political identity in America today is not Republican. It is not Democrat. It is Independent. There are more of us than either party, so Independents belong in the fight,” he said, adding that electing independent candidates could pressure both major parties to change their approach and move closer to the political centre.
“Understand if the goal is to change how both parties behave, if the goal is to bring them back to the middle, where most American values live, then electing Independents is a mechanism to make that happen,” McConaughey said.
He encouraged voters to research the candidates contesting elections in their areas and assess whether they represented their views.
“I’m not telling you who to vote for. I’m telling you to look at your ballot and study up. See if they represent you, what you believe in,” he said.
McConaughey has previously hinted that he might consider entering politics. He also plays a fictionalised version of himself running for governor of Texas in the Apple TV+ series Brothers.
