The hijacking of an oil tanker by Somali pirates has triggered a wave of concern from public figures and the families of the 11 Pakistani crew members currently held hostage. Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi met with the affected families on Monday, promising that the federal government is taking measures to ensure the safe release of the crew and the vessel’s Indonesian captain.
The incident, which occurred in international waters last week, has drawn sharp reactions from celebrities demanding immediate state intervention.
Rapper Talha Anjum highlighted the urgency of the situation on social media, noting that one of the victims, Yasir Khan, is close to him. “There is a matter of life & death that needs our GRAVE ATTENTION before it is too late! 11 Pakistanis were abducted 7 days ago by Somali Pirates and our GOVERNMENT has taken no action for the safety of the sons of Pakistan,” Anjum posted.
Actor Sabeena Farooq questioned the lack of media coverage and official response, stating, “Why is this not in news & social media?”.
Actor Sajal Aly, Hania Aamir, Mahira Khan and Rushna Khan also shared details of the hijacked vessel, urging the public to spread the news to pressurise authorities for a swift recovery.
Governor Hashmi held a press conference alongside the families, asserting that both federal and provincial governments are coordinating on the matter.
He confirmed that communication with the hostages remains intact and that recovery efforts are moving forward at multiple levels. “The federal government will not leave them alone under any circumstances during the crisis,” Hashmi told the families.
The Governor further noted that Pakistan is in discussions with the European Union (EU) to assist in the recovery. He explained that since the hijacking took place outside Pakistan’s maritime boundaries, the case involves complexities that authorities are currently navigating through diplomatic and maritime channels.
The families expressed gratitude for the Governor’s prompt involvement, noting that the government’s engagement provides hope for the safe return of their relatives.
Despite the complexities of the international waters where the abduction occurred, officials reiterated their commitment to stand with the families until the crew is recovered. Efforts for a safe release are currently going on.
