The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised its 2026 economic growth forecast for developing Asia and the Pacific to 4.9 percent, according to an update to its Asian Development Outlook report released on Wednesday.

The projection reflects a decrease from the 5.1 percent growth rate predicted by the institution in April, though it represents a rise from the 4.7 percent estimate issued later that same month.

The region comprises 43 economies, including China, India, Georgia, and Samoa, while excluding advanced economies such as Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea.

The Manila-based lender attributed the adjusted outlook to geopolitical factors, specifically pointing to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

“The Middle East conflict has led to prolonged disruption to energy and supply chains, raising production costs and dampening economic activity,” the ADB stated in its report.

For the year 2027, the ADB increased its growth forecast for the region to 5.1 percent. This figure aligns with its initial April projection and shows an increase from the 4.9 percent estimate calculated in late April.

The report identified multiple risks that could impact these economic projections. These factors include a potential escalation of the Middle East conflict, extended instability in energy markets, stricter global financial conditions, the financial repricing of artificial intelligence stocks, and a worsening property downturn within China.

Economic performance varies across the specific subregions.

The ADB projects East Asia to expand by 4.6 percent this year, an upward revision from the 4.4 percent estimated in late April. Southeast Asia is also expected to grow by 4.6 percent, rising from the previous 4.2 percent estimate. South Asia’s growth projection was upgraded to 6.0 percent from the late-April estimate of 5.7 percent.

Regional inflation is now projected to reach 4.6 percent this year. This expectation is higher than the 3.6 percent forecast from early April, but lower than the 5.2 percent figure predicted in late April. ADB expects regional inflation to drop to 3.4 percent in 2027.
