A man shot dead his wife at her parents’ home in Multan after a verbal dispute while also injuring his mother-in-law before fleeing, police said.
The incident took place in the Grid Station area on Vehari Road, within the jurisdiction of Seetal Mari police station.
Multan City Police Officer (CPO) Sadiq Ali Dogar said the suspect, identified as Naeem, had gone to the house to pick up his child when a verbal spat broke out between him and his wife Amna Bibi.
“Basically, the reason for the conflict was that he was unemployed. His in-laws even sent him to Saudi Arabia at their own expense, but he couldn’t settle there either. Upon returning, disputes arose again,” Dogar said during an interview on a private media talk show.
He said that Naeem opened fire during the argument, killing Amna. Her mother, Abida Bibi, was outside in the street when the suspect also shot at her.
Abida sustained two bullet wounds near her abdomen and was shifted to a hospital in critical condition.
According to the CPO, Amna had filed a Khula case against Naeem, which was pending in court. He also said there were reports of substance abuse involving the suspect, which police will confirm after his arrest.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing the shooting taking place in broad daylight.
Dogar said that police teams had been sent to two or three locations after tracing the suspect following his escape from the scene.
“Obviously, he is a fugitive who fled the area. He is originally a resident of Rawalpindi, where his elderly father lives, who had disowned him due to his conduct. The difficulty arises because he doesn’t have a permanent residence of his own; he stays with friends or in various places,” he said.
The CPO stated that police were hopeful of arresting Naeem overnight.
