The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested two men for allegedly defrauding United States (US) citizens through an illegal call centre in Lahore by posing as insurance company representatives and obtaining their credit and debit card details.

NCCIA Lahore Zone Additional Director Atif Ameer said that the agency identified suspicious activity at a call centre on Main Boulevard in Gulberg through open-source intelligence.

The agency then obtained a search warrant from a court before taking action against the suspects.

Ameer identified the arrested men as Irshad Ahmed Butt, the call centre owner, and Aurangzeb, his employee.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects contacted US citizens while posing as representatives of insurance companies. They approached people under the pretext of an insurance campaign and obtained their credit and debit card details, Ameer said.

He added that the suspects used the information to carry out illegal financial transactions.

During the operation, the NCCIA recovered laptops and mobile phones from the call centre. Ameer stated that an examination of the devices revealed online calling software and data linked to financial fraud.
