A nine-year-old madrassa student has died after allegedly being subjected to physical assault at a religious seminary in Rawalpindi’s Kallar Syedan, with police registering a case and taking two people into custody.
According to police, the victim, Muhammad Faizan, was a resident of Bhakkar and had been studying at a madrassa in Nalla Muslimana village for about four months.
Police said the boy was initially taken to a local hospital on the pretext that he was unwell. His parents were informed but arrived after he had died.
The family then took the body to their native village, where they noticed marks of alleged physical assault during funeral rites.
They subsequently contacted police and brought the body back to Kallar Syedan, where officers took it into custody for a post-mortem examination.
According to police sources, the madrasa’s qari, identified as Sanaullah, fled the scene shortly after.
A Rawalpindi police spokesperson later said Kallar Syedan police had registered a case and detained two suspects for questioning. The spokesperson did not identify the suspects or provide details of the charges.
Police said the investigation was underway and that anyone found to have been involved would be arrested.
The spokesperson said violence against children was unacceptable and that those responsible would be dealt with as per law.
