Okara police have suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Muhammad Shafiq and issued him a charge sheet after a video allegedly showing unprofessional conduct while on duty circulated on social media, according to an official police statement.
Shafiq, who was posted at Ravi Narowal police station, allegedly appeared in the video cooking food inside a police office while on duty.
The footage also showed him in plain clothes rather than a police uniform.
The video further appeared to show Shafiq collecting money from citizens in the name of “sweets”, prompting allegations of bribery against the police official.
Okara District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Asad Ejaz Malhi took notice of the footage and ordered immediate departmental action against Shafiq, police said.
The department has appointed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) City Circle-I as the inquiry officer to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.
The inquiry will examine the allegations and circumstances surrounding the conduct shown in the video. Further action against Shafiq will be taken in light of the inquiry officer’s findings and recommendations, police said.
Okara police said the department was enforcing a “zero tolerance” policy towards unprofessional conduct, adding that discipline and standards of public service would not be compromised.
The action follows public attention surrounding the video, which raised questions about the conduct of the official while performing his duties.
