Sikh student Onkar Singh has made history by becoming the first Sikh student to secure a top position in the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore’s matriculation examinations.
“I am very happy to have secured this position,” Onkar Singh said, expressing his happiness after securing the second position.
This is not the first time Onkar Singh has excelled academically. He also secured second position in his ninth-grade examinations, marking two consecutive years of top-tier performance. Last year, he scored full marks in Islamic Studies and the translation of the Holy Quran, reflecting his dedication across subjects.
Onkar Singh dedicated his achievement to his father, saying that his hard work was driven by a desire to make him proud and become a source of hope for his family.
He also shared his ambition to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a doctor.
“My dream is to become a doctor like my father,” he said.
His father, Dr Mimpal Singh, a recipient of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, expressed immense pride over his son’s achievement. He said the result showed that students in Pakistan were judged on merit rather than religion.
“No one is given any advantage on the basis of religion in this country. My son’s position is an example of that,” Dr Singh said.
He added that he never has been unnecessarily strict toward his son, and instead encourages him to stay focused on his education and academic goals.
