National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said the opposition has the constitutional and political right to bring a vote of no confidence against the prime minister or speaker.

“The opposition has the right to bring a vote of no confidence. It is their political and constitutional right,” Sadiq said while speaking to media Tuesday.

He also said the National Assembly will facilitate the opposition if it decided to initiate such a move. “If the opposition wishes to bring no confidence against the government, we will facilitate it.”

Sadiq’s remarks, which reaffirmed that the opposition could use the parliamentary procedure if it chose to challenge the government or the speaker, come as opposition parties agree to form a joint opposition in the parliament.

The development comes amid growing criticism of the government over the country’s law and order situation, challenges to its writ and what opposition leaders described as a lack of preparedness to deal with the crises facing the country.
