Pakistan’s armed forces shot down eight drones after they entered the country’s airspace from Afghanistan on Wednesday, according to media reports that cited security sources. Four were intercepted near Torkham, while the other four were brought down near Kohat.
According to the reports, the drones were detected and engaged by Pakistan’s air defence system, which remains operational around the clock.
The four drones near Kohat were shot down in mountainous areas along the border, the reports added.
Security sources described the incident as an attempted intrusion by the Afghan Taliban regime and alleged that the drones were intended to target public areas.
They said the incursion was successfully thwarted by Pakistan’s armed forces.
Separately, the sources said security forces had repelled an attempted infiltration by Fitna al-Khawarij from Afghanistan into the Kurram sector on Tuesday night.
The infiltration attempt was allegedly carried out under the supervision of the Afghan Taliban from posts in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces, according to the sources.
Pakistani troops deployed along the border repulsed the attempt, they said.
Following the failed infiltration, the Afghan Taliban opened fire on Pakistani border posts using heavy weapons and mortars, the sources alleged.
Pakistani forces responded by targeting Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive locations with small and heavy weapons, including artillery.
