The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has recorded a historic 48 percent increase in the number of investors over the past year, with over 190,000 new participants joining the market. The surge has pushed the total number of stock market investors in the country to more than 583,000, according to recent data released by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

The substantial growth in investor numbers is largely attributed to the enthusiasm of the younger generation. Reports indicate that 45 percent of the new entrants are aged between 18 and 30, while those in the 31 to 45 age bracket account for another 41 percent of the total.

The youthful participation underscores a significant shift in financial engagement trends across the nation, suggesting a growing awareness of capital markets. Geographically, the momentum remains concentrated in major urban centres. Karachi leads the country with 25 percent of all new investor accounts, whilst Lahore follows closely, contributing 16 percent.

Furthermore, the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi collectively accounted for 13 percent of the new investment community, highlighting that the appeal of stock market investment is broadening across the country’s key metropolitan areas.

The SECP attributes this rapid influx to a series of proactive regulatory reforms designed specifically to democratise access to the capital market. Significant policy adjustments, such as raising the Sahulat Account investment limit from Rs 1 million to Rs 3 million, have provided greater flexibility for retail participants.

SECP Chairman, Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, has reaffirmed that engaging the country’s youth remains a primary regulatory priority for the commission. He highlighted that a bespoke digital onboarding mobile application is currently being introduced to further streamline the investment experience for new users.
