Coke Studio’s 2022 hit Pasoori has crossed one billion views on YouTube, making it the first Pakistan-made music video to reach the milestone.
Coke Studio announced the achievement on Instagram on Sunday, thanking “every single person who pressed play, sang along and made it their own.”
The Ali Sethi and Shae Gill duet was released on February 7, 2022. It took just shy of four years and seven months to cross the billion-view mark. The milestone comes as little surprise given the song’s sustained popularity since its debut. It was Spotify’s most streamed Pakistani song in the year of its release and remains both Sethi and Gill’s most-streamed track on the platform, with close to 405 million streams.
Alongside the announcement, Coke Studio shared a reel featuring Sethi and Gill together with producers Zulfiqar Khan, known as Xulfi, and Abdullah Siddiqui, thanking fans for helping the smash hit song reach the landmark.
Pasoori built its global following steadily, inspiring numerous covers across Pakistan, India and beyond the subcontinent. The song also found its way onto the soundtrack of Disney’s “Ms. Marvel,” a show that leaned heavily on Pakistani culture through its Pakistani-American lead character.
The track’s reach extended to Africa as well, with Coke Studio Africa producing a remix that saw Sethi collaborate with Marwan Moussa and Reekado Banks, blending the original with Nigerian Afrobeats influences.
Bollywood also attempted its own version of the song, with Arijit Singh lending his voice to a rendition.
