A Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) investigation into the “pen bomb” incident near Model Colony Railway Track, Karachi has found that the device was not an explosive but a firecracker, sources have told a private media outlet.
Investigative sources said that the injured youth, Abdul Sami, told police he had purchased the firecracker for his cousin’s birthday celebration.
Police had earlier registered a case under terrorism and explosives charges after Abdul Sami was injured while handling a pen-shaped object he said he had found on the roadside.
According to the initial FIR [First Information Report], Abdul Sami, a resident of New Karachi, was walking near Model Colony Railway Track when he picked up the object. It exploded in his hand, injuring his fingers and face. He was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment.
Following the incident, police cordoned off the area and collected forensic evidence, initially suspecting the device to be a pen bomb.
Subsequent investigation and Abdul Sami’s statement indicated that the object was a firecracker purchased for a family birthday event and not an improvised explosive device.
Officials said that the case record is being reviewed in light of the new findings, while forensic analysis of the recovered material is being carried out. No additional arrests have been reported.
