A suspect arrested in a case involving the desecration of graves was killed when unidentified armed men opened fire on a Badaber police team in the Sheikhan area on Tuesday, police said.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Salman, an Afghan national, was being taken to the Sheikhan graveyard to identify the crime scene when six armed men riding three motorcycles suddenly attacked the police team.
The attackers opened indiscriminate fire, damaging the official police vehicle and the bulletproof jacket and helmet of a police official, police said.
The detained suspect sustained serious bullet injuries in the attack. He was being shifted to hospital when he succumbed to his wounds on the way, according to police.
The attackers fled the scene after the firing.
Police said that Salman had been arrested a day earlier while allegedly attempting to desecrate a grave at the Sheikhan graveyard.
During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to desecrating 10 graves of minor girls and assaulting their bodies.
