The government on Friday slashed the price of petrol by Rs4 per litre and High-Speed Diesel (HSD) by Rs2 per litre, effective immediately.
With the latest cut, petrol now stands at Rs373.78 per litre, down from Rs377.78, while HSD has dropped to Rs378.78 from Rs380.78.
The Petroleum Division’s notification confirmed the new rates would take effect from June 13.
This marks the fifth straight weekly reduction in fuel prices, bringing the cumulative drop to Rs41 per litre.
Last week, the government had cut petrol prices by Rs4 per litre while keeping HSD unchanged at Rs380.78.
Currently, the government collects around Rs125 per litre on petrol in the form of petroleum levy, customs duty and climate levy. On HSD, the total charge comes to about Rs100 per litre, which includes customs duty, petroleum levy, climate support levy and the inland freight equalisation margin.
Kerosene has a petroleum levy of about Rs21 per litre, while light diesel oil is charged at roughly Rs16 per litre.
Petrol and HSD remain the two biggest revenue earners in the petroleum sector, with combined monthly sales of 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes. Kerosene, by comparison, sees monthly demand of only around 10,000 tonnes.
Petrol is primarily used in private vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers, making its price a direct pressure point for middle and lower-middle class households. HSD is largely consumed by the heavy transport sector and large generators.
The government has been revising petroleum prices on a weekly basis every Friday night since the US-Israeli war on Iran which began on February 28 and is currently paused.
