Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has inaugurated Pakistan’s largest data centre, Sky47 AI cloud in Islamabad on Friday, hailing the high-tech facility as a “transformative milestone” for the nation’s digital landscape.
The newly launched project possesses a total capacity of 8.5 megawatts. Alongside the capital facility, developers are constructing a 5-megawatt data centre at Karachi’s Port Qasim, which is scheduled for completion in September. Additional state-of-the-art data centres are planned for Lahore and Karachi.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the premier described the project as a proud achievement built in record time through the combined expertise of civilian and military specialists. He commended the leadership of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir, under whose direct supervision workers constructed the facility.
Prime Minister Shehbaz termed the installation “awe-inspiring” and emphasized its critical importance for national advancement.
“The facility we have just visited is awe-inspiring,” he stated. He expressed strong optimism that replicating the collaborative model would allow the country to recover from past economic losses and foster a dynamic, forward-looking future.
Furthermore, he characterized the infrastructure as a wonderful gift for citizens, noting that it offered invaluable security and proved that complex national objectives remain achievable through collective determination.
Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja also addressed the gathering, describing the initiative as an essential step toward building a robust foundation for token intelligence. Highlighting the importance of the infrastructure she noted that it was “capable of producing the most important economic unit today: token intelligence”.
She emphasized that future economic growth across healthcare, agriculture, and public administration depends heavily on high-performance computing access.
