Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are planning to move back to Britain later this month, an international media outlet has reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The couple, who currently live in California, are reportedly preparing to relocate to a private residence outside London. The report said that their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have also been enrolled in British schools for the upcoming term.
King Charles was informed of the couple’s plans on Sunday. The move was not discussed during Harry and Meghan’s family visit to the UK in July.
The King welcomes the prospect of spending more time with the Sussex family in a private and personal capacity. However, there will be no change to Harry and Meghan’s status as private individuals and non-working members of the royal family.
Harry and Meghan moved to North America in 2020 after stepping back from royal duties. The couple had cited tabloid intrusion, racism in British institutions, online abuse and family tensions among the reasons for leaving the UK.
Harry has continued to visit Britain since then, including for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022 and King Charles’ coronation in 2023.
His visit to England in September last year included his first face-to-face meeting with his father in 19 months.
In July, King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove House, the King’s private residence in Gloucestershire. It was the first time in four years that Charles met the entire family.
Harry was in the UK that month for several charity engagements, including events marking one year until the Invictus Games, the sporting competition for injured servicemembers and veterans that he founded more than a decade ago.
Harry had previously challenged the British government’s decision to reduce his taxpayer-funded security after he stepped back from royal duties.
After losing the case, Harry told an international media outlet last year that he was “devastated” by the decision and said that it made it “impossible” for him to return to the UK with his wife and children.
