Quetta Gladiators' spinner Usman Tariq has shared his side of a heated mid-match exchange with New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 fixture in Karachi, where Mitchell refused to face his delivery twice in the ninth over.
Speaking on the pitch-side post-match show, Usman Tariq said the first time Mitchell stepped away, he assumed there was a distraction near the screen at the other end.
"When he stepped back the first time, I thought there must have been some issue near the screen," he said. "But when he stepped back a second time, I asked him what the problem was."
Mitchell told him he was taking a pause between deliveries. Usman Tariq's response was blunt. "I told him, I will take a pause the third time, the fourth time too. Now it is up to you what you want to do," he said.
The umpire then stepped in and told Mitchell he could not do that. "The umpire told Daryl Mitchell that he cannot do this, and that my action is within the laws of the game," Usman Tariq said.
Usman Tariq's bowling action has drawn significant attention in international cricket circles, with Indian media repeatedly calling for a ban on him.
However, experts have consistently maintained that his action fully complies with ICC regulations.
Quetta Gladiators won the match against Rawalpindis by 61 runs.
