Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has demanded that jailed party founder Imran Khan be taken to Shifa International Hospital for a recommended heart scan after a Computed tomography angiography (CTA) was not performed during his recent visit to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said on Sunday that the test should be carried out immediately under the supervision of independent specialists and Khan’s personal physicians.
Khan was taken to Pims in the early hours of Friday for an eye procedure and diagnostic examinations.
According to details cited by PTI, a PIMS cardiologist had recommended CT coronary angiography on August 1 because of fluctuating blood pressure, palpitations, headaches and restlessness, as well as potential cardiac complications.
According to reports, Pims’ 128-slice CT scanner, operational since March 2022, was capable of performing the examination, although hospital staff reportedly said that the required facility was unavailable.
Following the controversy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed an inquiry committee headed by the establishment division secretary to determine what happened and establish responsibility.
Akram questioned why Khan had been taken to PIMS instead of Shifa, where he said the required facilities were available.
He also alleged that the failure to conduct the test reflected a wider pattern of delays in providing Khan with medical care.
The PTI called for Khan’s complete medical records and diagnostic results to be shared promptly with his family, personal doctors and legal team.
It also demanded implementation of the Supreme Court’s August 18 order concerning his medical examination and treatment.
The Supreme Court had directed the government to move Khan to Shifa within two days for examination by a multidisciplinary medical board.
The government subsequently sought a review of the order, while the court returned the plea over procedural deficiencies.
The government said Khan was diverted from Shifa because of security concerns linked to PTI workers.
PIMS later said specialists from Shifa participated in his eye assessment, while other examinations were conducted by their own doctors.
