Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced that he will begin teaching students in government schools from the first week of September, saying that the initiative is aimed at assessing classroom realities, learning standards and teaching quality firsthand.
The minister stated that he would teach English, Chemistry and other subjects during weekly visits to government schools in Lahore. According to Hayat, he will teach English at primary schools and Chemistry at high schools, while also conducting lessons in other subjects during his visits.
He confirmed that the school visits would be unannounced, enabling him to observe the learning environment, monitor teaching standards and identify areas requiring improvement.
“I respect teachers and will feel proud to serve as a teacher,” Hayat said, adding that the initiative would help evaluate the standard of education directly and support practical measures to improve the quality of learning in government schools.
In a post on X, the minister wrote: “Beginning in September, I will teach English & Chemistry in government schools each week to directly assess classroom realities, learning levels & teaching quality.”
He added that the responsibility entrusted to him by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was “both an honour & an opportunity to strengthen education through firsthand engagement.”
According to the minister, English and Chemistry have always been among his favourite subjects, which is why he has chosen to begin by teaching those disciplines.
Hayat said that the initiative is intended to provide direct insight into classroom conditions and help identify shortcomings in the teaching system through regular engagement with students and teachers.
The announcement comes as the Punjab government continues efforts to improve the quality of public education. According to the minister, personally teaching classes and making regular visits to schools will enable him to better understand challenges faced by students and teachers and support informed decision-making within the education sector.
