A brief protest erupted in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Bilal Yamin accused Jhang District Police Officer (DPO) Sajid Hussain Khokhar of failing to salute elected lawmakers during an official event, prompting the police officer to later apologise.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Bilal Yamin said the incident reflected a lack of respect towards elected representatives. He announced that he would boycott the Assembly proceedings in protest, insisting that public officials must observe official protocol and show due respect to members of the legislature.
The issue drew the attention of fellow lawmakers, with several members calling for the matter to be addressed to avoid similar incidents in the future. The protest briefly disrupted proceedings before the matter was taken up by the House.
Following the criticism, DPO Sajid Hussain Khokhar apologised for the incident. The apology helped defuse tensions, although it remained unclear whether it was delivered directly to the lawmakers or through official channels.
The incident reportedly occurred during an official engagement, where members of the Punjab Assembly alleged that the district police chief did not salute them in accordance with established protocol. While no further details of the event were shared during the Assembly session, the matter quickly became a point of discussion among legislators.
Assembly proceedings continued after the issue was raised and the apology was acknowledged.
