Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that applications will open on Friday for students across the province to receive electric bikes with zero down payment and a monthly instalment of Rs3,000.
“We will be opening applications on Friday for students across Punjab to apply for an electric bike with zero down payment and an affordable monthly instalment of just Rs. 3,000,” Maryam said in a post on X.
She said the scheme would be available to students from both government and private-sector institutions, giving them equal access to the programme.
The chief minister said the electric bikes would help make daily travel more convenient while reducing students’ fuel expenses and the cost of commuting.
“Our vision is simple: we want Punjab’s students to be independent, empowered, and dependent on no one for their mobility,” she said.
Maryam added that the bikes would be available in black for male students and pink for female students.
The announcement follows a special meeting chaired by the chief minister on Wednesday to review the “CM Maryam Nawaz E-Bike Scheme”.
During the meeting, she rejected proposals requiring students to pay a down payment or any amount other than the monthly instalment.
The Punjab government will bear the interest and insurance costs of the electric bikes, according to the meeting.
More than 125,000 e-bikes are to be provided to eligible students under the scheme.
Maryam had earlier agreed in principle to set the monthly instalment at around Rs3,000 and directed officials to open the e-bike portal this week and arrange delivery of the bikes to eligible students within six weeks.
The meeting was informed that the bikes would be equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a type of rechargeable battery.
Recipients will also receive helmets and safety rods free of charge.
The scheme will additionally provide aspiring students with two days of free e-bike driving training.
