A video clip from a news programme on a private channel has gone viral after Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab overheard the producer’s instructions to the host during a live discussion on the city’s situation after intense rains.
While he was speaking about the situation, Wahab’s voice got muted. When it came back, he said, “Mujhy awaaz aa gayi hai ke ‘isko ragar do’,” and the call dropped moments later.
Neither the channel nor Wahab has issued a clarification on what exactly happened during the segment.
The video continues to circulate on X, where users have shared mixed reactions.
The exchange took place in the evening after Karachi dealt with the aftermath of heavy rainfall that hit the city on Thursday. At least five people lost their lives, including four who died from electrocution, as large parts of the city faced flooding and prolonged power outages.
According to the Met Office, Nazimabad recorded the highest rainfall at 69.6 millimetres. Other areas also received significant rain, including Keamari with 56mm, Saadi Town 48mm, University Road 44.2mm, Bahria Town 43.5mm, Orangi Town 39.4mm, Gulshan-i-Maymar 36mm, while Surjani Town and Jinnah Terminal recorded 35mm each.
Weather officials expect partly cloudy conditions on Friday morning with chances of light drizzle in the early hours. Conditions are likely to improve later in the day with clearer weather.
In a video statement issued later, Wahab said that the situation in the city remained under control. “Traffic is moving on major arteries,” he said, adding that he had monitored conditions across different areas with his team and that all major underpasses were open.
