Police have arrested Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Maliha Sahar’s husband Jawad Ali, after she filed a complaint accusing him of assault, wrongful confinement, death threats and continued domestic violence.

Ali was on Monday presented before a court, which sent him to jail on a 14-day judicial remand, police said.

Earlier, the Women Police Station in Rawalpindi registered the case under Sections 342 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Sahar, who is married to Ali and has two minor children with him, alleged that he had subjected her to physical, psychological and emotional abuse over several months.

She said that she had remained silent in an attempt to protect her family, but alleged that his behaviour had become increasingly violent and coercive.

According to her complaint, the situation escalated on October 2 when Ali allegedly assaulted her, took away her mobile phone and locked her inside a room.

She alleged that her husband prevented her from leaving the room and stopped her from contacting her family, seeing her children, approaching the police or seeking emergency assistance.

She further alleged that Ali repeatedly threatened to kill her and harm their children, causing her to fear for her life and safety.

The ADC also alleged that taking away her mobile phone and restricting her movement deprived her of access to help and isolated her from her family, police and others who could assist her.

She went on to describe the incident as part of a continuing pattern rather than an isolated domestic dispute.
