A case of medical negligence at the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology, where a pair of scissors was left inside a patient’s chest during open-heart surgery, has come to light.

The patient, 22-year-old Saqlain from Toba Tek Singh, underwent the procedure at the hospital.

Hospital staff failed to remove the scissors from his body before the operation was wrapped up, leaving him in pain for three weeks until a second surgery was performed to take the instrument out.

Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Nadeem told media that the probe found that the nurses had not carried out a full count of surgical instruments after the procedure, a failure he called a serious breach of protocol.

He noted that both nurses found responsible have been relieved of their duty at the hospital. A letter has also been sent to the Secretary of Health seeking further action against them.
