Second marriage sends Lahori man to jail

The debate surrounding a man’s second marriage has gone on for long. The Islamabad High Court recently ruled that a man needs permission from an arbitration council even if his first wife allows.

A Lahori man got himself into trouble by contracting a second marriage without the permission of his first wife. First wife Shamim Bibi filed a case against her husband and stated in her appeal that her husband cheated on her and did not take permission from her for second marriage.

The first wife said that this is still less punishment for him.

Islamabad High Court (IHC) had made it compulsory to take permission from the reconciliation council for second marriage after asking the first wife. If a man’s first wife grants him permission but reconciliation council does not approve his second marriage then that marriage can cost him a fine and a punishment.
