Emcure Pharmaceuticals Executive Director and Shark Tank India judge Namita Thapar has addressed online harassment she faced following a social media post regarding the health benefits of Namaz.
As per the details, Thapar, in a video on her social media on Monday, revealed that both she and her mother were subjected to verbal abuse and personal attacks for three weeks after the Namaz benefits post was published to her accounts on March 25.
The video in question had shown her celebrating Eid with friends, describing Namaz as a full-body exercise that assists with body flexibility, supports joints and aids digestion. The entrepreneur had gone on to mention that certain postures provide physical benefits while the meditative aspect of prayer supports mental health.
“For the past three weeks, people have been calling me names non-stop and even my mother has been subjected to abusive name-calling,” Thapar said in a video message Monday.
“For what? For making a reel on the health benefits of Namaz? I am a healthcare professional. I have made reels on Hindu rituals and their health benefits. Every Yoga Day I share asanas, especially Surya Namaskar, and no one said anything then,” she added.
Thapar criticised the nature of the trolling and the silence regarding the disrespect shown toward women.
“I have been taught that R for Religion means R for Respect. Is this how you respect, especially women?” she asked.
“I learned long ago that no one is there for you; you have to speak up for yourself.”
The entrepreneur identified herself as a proud Hindu and reminded those targeting her of the concept of karma. She maintained that her intent was to discuss health and inclusivity, noting that while she received praise from some followers for her stance, the majority of the engagement involved personal attacks.
