Punjab Police have arrested a Sub-Inspector (SI) after a video showing him hitting a female street vendor with a shoe in Kamalia, Toba Tek Singh went viral.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Karim ordered action against Imran Ghafoor, who was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sadar Kamalia police station in Toba Tek Singh.
Police registered a case against Ghafoor on the complaint of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kamalia Circle and arrested him. The department had already suspended him and initiated an inquiry into the incident.
The FIR [First Information Report] stated that Ghafoor allegedly assaulted the woman in front of people in the Mill Fattiana area after police received a call on emergency helpline 15 about a suspected theft.
The FIR said that the SI accused the street vendor of theft before allegedly striking her with a shoe.
Punjab IGP Abdul Karim said that the police have a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and mistreatment of women.
He added that officers who misuse their authority or mistreat citizens will not be given any concession and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
