A six-month pregnant woman was killed after her husband and his first wife allegedly set her ablaze in the Al-Jalil Garden area of Sheikhupura.

According to an FIR [First Information Report] filed by the victim’s mother, Tehreem Bibi had gotten married to Hamza two years ago. Hamza’s first wife Salma already had with him two daughters and a son, but he kept both women in the same house

Both women often got into altercations, the FIR stated, adding that Salma also assaulted Tehreem a number of times. The victim’s mother further told the police that Hamza’s own behaviour toward Tehreem had also turned abusive in recent months.

The FIR stated that Tehreem called her mother around 4 pm on the day of the incident, saying that Salma and Hamza were beating her up. Her mother told her to be patient and that she would visit her the next day.

Around 11 pm the same night, the FIR read, Hamza called the complainant’s brother Muhammad Kashif, telling him that Tehreem had suffered burn injuries.

The complainant said that she, along with Kashif and her brother-in-law Aurangzeb, rushed to Hamza’s house where they found her daughter’s burned body lying in the kitchen.

While police have registered a case against Hamza and Salma under sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and probe is underway, Tehreem’s family, in conversation with a private media outlet, said that Hamza was a police constable and had used his position to threaten them repeatedly.

According to Tehreem’s brother, Hamza had also shot him in the leg in the past and lodged multiple police cases against the family in retaliation whenever they tried to intervene and protect Tehreem.

The family said that Hamza also threatened them after Tehreem’s death, telling them he would be released within days and would exact revenge.

The family has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the case.
