Sony Pictures and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has claimed the second-biggest global opening weekend in box office history, hauling in $927 million worldwide.

The film sits behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which opened to $1.22 billion in 2019.

The new Spider-Man movie added $572 million from 66 international markets to its $355 million North American opening, according to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak.

That international haul made Brand New Day the best-ever global opening for the Spider-Man franchise, comfortably surpassing its predecessor ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, whose $600.5 million global debut in 2021 had stood as the third-best opening of all time and now ranks fourth.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived almost five years after the last Spider-Man movie.

Chris Colombo, founder of box office analytics firm Brighter Path, called the film a “perfect storm” for a major blockbuster.

“You have the intellectual property, you have the character, you have FOMO [fear of missing out], plus good reviews,” Colombo told CNN.

Kevin Feige, head of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), praised the film’s reception. “This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out,” he said.

The film’s performance varied by market but proved strong across the board. In South Korea, Brand New Day opened at No. 1 ahead of a major local title and set a first-day occupancy record with 53 percent of seats sold.

In Japan, the film pulled in an audience beyond its usual demographic, appealing to viewers in the 20 to 40 age range, a group that can be difficult for American films to reach in that market.

The global result also extended a hot streak at cinemas in recent weeks. Universal Pictures’ ‘The Odyssey’, still playing in premium IMAX screens, added $51 million domestically in its third weekend, pushing its worldwide total to $721 million.

Together, Brand New Day and The Odyssey have powered the biggest collective weekend in domestic box office history, at roughly $430 million, ahead of the previous best of $402 million set during the release of Avengers: Endgame.
