President of United States (US) Donald Trump has once again left social media users debating what exactly he means after posting a picture of the Moon alongside a US flag with the words, “The Moon Is Ours”.

Trump shared the image on Truth Social, appearing to suggest that the US owns the Earth’s natural satellite. The post quickly turned into a mix of criticism, sarcasm and jokes, with users questioning the idea of a US president claiming ownership of the Moon through a social media post.

Commenters challenged the validity of the post by referencing international treaties. “Before everyone starts fighting in the replies: Yes, the post is real, but no, the U.S. hasn’t legally claimed the Moon,” wrote one user. “The 1967 Outer Space Treaty literally makes it illegal for any country to own space. It’s just a hype post for NASA’s Artemis program.”

While some users focused on the legal question, others appeared more concerned about Trump himself. “He’s crazy and the whole world knows it,” one person wrote.

Another asked, “How is the US Congress allowing this obviously insane and demented fool to continue being POTUS?”

The reactions soon moved from criticism to sarcasm, with users imagining what Trump’s apparent claim over the Moon could mean next. “He ran out of bodies of water to rename, so naturally he looked up,” one user wrote, referring to Trump’s recent posts about changing the names of geographic locations.

Another joked, “Does that mean Trump will put tariffs on countries using Gravity, tides, and weather?”

A user responding to the Moon post shared an image of the Andromeda galaxy with the words “The Andromeda galaxy is our” and added, “Need to think bigger buddy. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Others took the idea even further. “He’s probably the emperor of the galaxy already if you ask him.”

The post also prompted jokes about what life on the Moon might look like under American ownership.

“Moon residents better start learning the American national anthem,” one person wrote. “Bro actually thinks typing THE MOON IS OURS, in all caps with a flag emoji gives NASA an automatic deed to space. America is genuinely being run by a cartoon character,” another user said.

Trump has also shared another post suggesting changes to the names of geographic locations in the US. He shared a map of New Mexico showing “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”, while the White House later reshared the image through its verified X account.

The post came days after Trump signed an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for US federal use. In January 2025, Trump also signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” for federal use.
