President of the United States (US) Donald Trump has praised the working relationship between Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir of Pakistan, saying that the two “just get along great”.
Speaking to Axios, Trump described the civil-military dynamic in Pakistan as a model worth noting. “In Pakistan, you have the Field Marshal, who is great,” he said. “And you have the prime minister, and they just get along great. The military guy totally respects the prime minister. It’s a beautiful thing to see”.
The remarks came alongside Trump’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s role in brokering the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” a diplomatic accord signed electronically between Washington and Tehran to end active military hostilities between the two countries.
“They knew the Iranians,” Trump said of Pakistan’s mediators. “They knew the people and they were good”. He added that Pakistan “really helped us with this deal.”
The 14-point framework agreement between US and Iran mandates an immediate halt to military operations, the lifting of the blockade, and the reopening of the Strait to commercial shipping.
PM Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the accord’s finalisation in a post on X, identifying himself as its primary mediator and guarantor. “The memorandum has been signed by honourable presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator,” he wrote.
A 60-day ceasefire extension built into the memorandum will allow international negotiators to work toward a permanent settlement covering regional security, sanctions relief, and the unfreezing of Iranian assets.
