Nepal police have arrested two men accused of stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who died in the floods near the Nepal-Tibet border.
The arrests came after a video of the theft went viral on social media.
The footage shows a group of people gathered around a crater where the woman’s body is lying in muddy water. Two men can be seen attempting to move the body with a stick before one holds the victim’s head up while the other removes earrings from her ears.
According to local media reports, police identified the two men through the video and arrested them on Thursday near a bus station in Pokhara. The suspects are aged 25 and 38.
Police are investigating the case. Initial inquiries suggest the woman was swept away by flooding in the Bhote Koshi River following a landslide from Tibet.
Chitwan district Police chief Rameshwar Paudel said such behaviour would not be tolerated. Police have also increased surveillance in areas affected by the floods to prevent similar incidents during ongoing rescue and recovery operations, according to a local news media outlet.
