Police have arrested three suspects after a Karachi University professor and his nephew were assaulted following a traffic accident near the port city’s Safoora Chowrangi.

As per the details, the victims were University of Karachi Islamic Learning Department Chairperson Dr Professor Mohammed Arif Khan Saqi and his nephew Mohammed Waheed Rehman.

East Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zubair Nazir Sheikh said that Dr Saqi was travelling towards the University of Karachi at around 10:15 am when a double-cabin vehicle reversing onto the road near Green Hotel hit his car.

With the vehicle then attempting to speed away, Dr Saqi said that he asked the occupants to compensate for the damage and later asked them for their names. He said that the occupants got out of the vehicle and started assaulting his nephew.

“In the meantime, their gunmen also arrived and started beating my nephew and me; as a result, we both fell on the road after being injured,” Dr Saqi said in his complaint.

The professor alleged that the suspects then forcibly took him and his nephew to a nearby eatery, where they were beaten again.

SSP Sheikh said that police issued a letter to Dr Saqi for medico-legal formalities after the incident. Police later registered an FIR [First Information Report] at Sachal Police Station and carried out raids, resulting in the arrest of three suspects.

“Further efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects,” SSP Sheikh said.

Sachal Police Station House Officer (SHO) Aijaz Pathan said that the suspects owned a restaurant in Safoora and described them as influential persons. He added that police were conducting raids to arrest all those involved in the incident.

The FIR, registered on Dr Saqi’s complaint, includes sections 147, 148, 149, 324 and 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Section 147 relates to punishment for rioting, Section 148 to rioting while armed with a deadly weapon, Section 149 to every member of an unlawful assembly being held guilty of an offence committed in pursuit of the common object, Section 324 to attempted murder and Section 342 pertains to wrongful confinement.
