The Iran-United States (US) peace summit in Switzerland nearly spiralled into chaos when, according to geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar, Pakistani military intelligence intercepted an Israeli Mossad plot for an attack on Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir, prompting a direct warning from Islamabad.
The claims were detailed during an online discussion hosted by political commentator Mario Nawfal days after Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif led Pakistan’s delegation to the conference, with CDF Munir accompanying him.
During the interview, Nawfal questioned Escobar regarding offline discussions about Israeli-Pakistani friction and an alleged threat.
“The short story is Pakistani military intel… they intercepted ultra-credible information that the Mossad was preparing under orders by Netanyahu, an assassination attempt against Asim Munir and maybe the rest of the Pakistani delegation going to Switzerland,” Escobar responded.
He added that Pakistani authorities used established diplomatic intermediaries to convey a direct response to the Israeli government that left nothing open to interpretation.
“The Pakistanis sent a direct message via the usual intermediaries. I would bet it would be Oman, in this case, directly to Israel saying, ‘If you touch our delegation, we’re going to wipe you off the map, period.’ I’m quoting. This is what our source told us,” Escobar said.
While official sources have not yet reacted to Escobar’s claims, Pakistani journalists have rubbished the same, saying that no such exchange took place or threats passed.
Among those who took to social media to set the record straight was senior journalist Syed Talat Hussain, who termed the story “utter nonsense”.
“This is utter nonsense. Not even a shred of truth to it. NOTHING of the sort ever occurred,” he said in a post on X, adding that a top-level Pakistani security official had also described the claim as “perverse propaganda”.
