United States (US) President Donald Trump left his audience in North Dakota startled after making a suggestive comment about a “threesome” involving himself and his two sons.
The joke came during an hour-long speech at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora as Trump discussed how Theodore Roosevelt and his son were one of only two father-son pairs to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the US, alongside Arthur and Douglas MacArthur.
Looking at his sons in the crowd, Trump stated, “Except for Arthur and Douglas MacArthur … they’re the only father and son pair to receive our nation’s highest military award for courage above and beyond the call of duty. Now, as I see my two beautiful sons sitting there, I think I’m going to give one to myself, one to them, and we’ll have a threesome.”
Following a direct reaction from the audience, Trump altered his proposal, suggesting he would select just one of his sons for the award, even though neither Trump nor his sons have military service records.
Trump then said, “Okay, I’ll pick out one of the two. I’ll give them the Congressional Medal of Honor for something for their genius at hunting, and I’ll get one for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia or something, and we’ll have a third pair now.”
He went on to add that he was joking.
The event marked the second time that day Trump joked about awarding himself the medal, which is strictly designated for conspicuous gallantry at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.
Earlier, he handed over Roosevelt’s original medal from the White House collection to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum during the official ribbon-cutting.
At the ceremony, Trump remarked, “You know, I want to give one to myself and they tell me I’m allowed to.” He then noted that he dropped the idea because his sons told him they could not think of anything he had done to earn it.
