United States (US) President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian exports, blaming Ottawa’s forest management policies for the wildfire smoke currently blanketing cities across North America.
With nearly 900 active blazes burning across Canada, including 200 in Ontario, Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday about holding the Canadian government accountable for deteriorating air quality.
“We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!” Trump wrote in his post.
The president accused the Canadian government of “willful negligence,” asserting that a refusal to engage in basic debris removal and forest management has led to an “incalculable” cost to the United States (US). He stated that the expenses must be recovered through increased financial penalties.
“This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the Tariffs Canada is currently paying,” President Trump added.
While Trump blames political leadership for the destruction, scientists note that the wildfire surge is driven by hot, dry conditions exacerbated by climate change.
The threat of heightened tariffs follows a pattern of pressure from the White House, which has used trade penalties to demand changes in border security and trade practices throughout Trump’s second term.
As the crisis grows, the smoke has raised concerns regarding upcoming major events, including the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey. Meanwhile, the administration faces criticism, with reports emerging that federal funding for wildfire research and health-impact studies has been significantly reduced under the current term.
