Police in Lahore have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged gang rape and unlawful confinement of a woman in the city’s Shad Bagh area, authorities said on Saturday.
The suspects, identified as Kazim and Hasnain, were arrested after Shad Bagh police registered a case on the woman’s complaint.
They were subsequently handed over to the investigation wing for further questioning.
According to the First information report (FIR), Kazim and Hasnain allegedly picked up the woman in their vehicle from Adda Ghar Pura.
The FIR states that Kazim gave her a drink containing an intoxicating substance, leaving her semi-conscious.
The woman was then taken to a room at an undisclosed location, where another suspect, Salman Umar Latif, was already present, according to the FIR.
The FIR alleges that the suspects sexually assaulted the woman by turn. It further states that she was beaten with belts and sticks after raising the alarm and threatened with death.
According to the FIR, the woman was kept confined in the room throughout the day and allegedly assaulted again before the suspects later dropped her near Bhaban Jhugian, close to Jungle Stadium in Shad Bagh, and fled after issuing further threats.
Police said that the woman contacted the emergency helpline 15, prompting Shad Bagh police to reach the location.
A spokesperson for the deputy inspector general of operations has stated that police teams acted promptly and arrested Kazim and Hasnain.
Raids were continuing to apprehend the other suspects named in the case.
The spokesperson confirmed that investigators were examining the incident from all angles and taking further action based on the evidence.
The woman was also being provided legal and medical assistance.
Deputy Inspector General of Operations Faisal Kamran has said that legal action will be taken without discrimination against those involved in crimes against women, while stressing that a prompt police response would be ensured in such cases.
