Two sanitation workers have died during treatment after they lost conscious while working inside a sewer in Bhimpura, within the limits of Napier police station in Karachi.
The incident occurred near a Jamaat Khana in the Old City area, where the two men were working inside the sewer. They reportedly became unconscious due to suffocation while carrying out the work.
Residents and Edhi volunteers pulled the workers out of the sewer and shifted them to the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre in an Edhi ambulance. After receiving initial treatment, the two men were taken to a private hospital in Saddar for further treatment, where they later died.
The deceased were identified as 19-year-old Wani, son of Raju, and 40-year-old Ramesh, son of Ahmed alias Kanji. Their bodies were shifted to the Chhipa morgue in ambulances.
A relative, Amit, said that the two men were brothers-in-law and both lived in the Maula Madad area of Lyari. He said that Ramesh was a father of two and lived with his wife and children in a rented house in Lyari, while his parents owned a house in Punjab Chowrangi’s Chandio village.
The two workers were privately employed at the Jamaat Khana and had been working inside the sewer when they collapsed.
The Jamaat Khana administration later held talks with the families following the deaths. A settlement letter was prepared and handed over to police, stating that the heirs did not wish to pursue legal action over the incident.
