Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, including the Grade 9 student who opened fire before taking his own life, police said.
The shooting occurred at a school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga city. According to a preliminary police report, the student brought a pistol and a rifle onto the campus and fired at pupils inside a classroom.
The second victim was a male student in the grade above the gunman, police said.
University president Ernald Andal said the incident had ended and there was no longer an active shooting.
“We do not want any of these things to happen. We wish to prioritise the safety of all our students,” Andal said.
Authorities deployed police and soldiers around the school as students and parents gathered outside the gates. Crime scene investigators also arrived at the campus, according to footage from the scene.
The shooting is the second deadly attack at a Philippine school in less than two months.
In June, two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City, killing at least three students and injuring about 20 others.
The incident came less than 10 days after a student went on a shooting rampage at a school outside Bangkok, Thailand, on August 7.
Authorities in Zamboanga said the situation was under control as investigators continued working at the scene.
