Videos showing an unidentified illuminated object moving across Tehran’s night sky have gone viral, with the sighting prompting UFO speculation and questions over whether the object was a drone, an aircraft or something else.
The footage shows bright lights moving through the darkness, but the videos circulating online do not establish the object’s size, altitude, distance or precise speed.
Several social media users have suggested that the object could be a drone or a group of drones, pointing to its illuminated lights and movement. There is, however, no reliable public evidence identifying it as a specific Iranian or foreign drone.
Others have suggested that the object could be an aircraft seen from a distance, with its navigation lights appearing unusual because of nighttime conditions and camera optics. No publicly available flight-tracking data or official aviation information has definitively identified it as a particular aircraft.
Iranian aviation or military authorities have not publicly identified the object in the footage, leaving its identity unresolved. Claims circulating on social media therefore remain speculation.
The footage is attracting greater attention as Iran remains involved in a military confrontation with the United States (US) and its allies, with Tehran warning against any new attack.
Iran’s military central command stated on state media that any major new US attack would trigger sustained retaliation against US bases and interests, while regional allies of Washington DC would be considered parties to the conflict.
Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi also said that if the US launched another offensive, Tehran _ change both the weapons and geography of the conflict, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
The heightened military activity has also included several reported incidents involving US drones over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian air defence intercepted and shot down a US Army MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, according to IRIB, while IRNA separately reported that Tehran had shot down another US MQ-1 drone over the waterway.
The Iranian army also announced that it had shot down an Orbiter reconnaissance drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, meanwhile, said that the country had no “absolutely no goodwill” towards the enemy. He stated that peace should not be rejected on religious grounds but warned against being unaware of what he described as the enemy’s deceit.
The Tehran footage has gained another layer of attention because it appeared around 50 years after a 1976 incident in which residents and officials in the Iranian capital reported seeing a bright unidentified object in the sky.
On September 19, 1976, Iranian authorities reportedly sent two F-4 Phantom fighter jets to investigate the object but its identity could not be established.
